Here is a very special early Tele – a bright & lively refin from 1959 with wonderful character and a big, chimy sound. This one obviously has some history, so here we go –
It was bought in its current condition from a well known Sydney retailer in 2004. This 59-er has previously had a nice make-over to emulate a classic Blackguard from some years earlier.
It has had a pro refinish in butterscotch lacquer sometime in the 90s. A later single ply black pickguard was added around the same time.
The fingerboard and headstock have been refinished, and applied over replacement decals. While preparing the headstock for its respray, it appears some of the overall thickness was sanded back so the headstock is approx one milimetre thinner than standard. Over time this has led to the headstock leaning slightly forward. However, it has been this way since well before the current owner acquired it in 2004, and nothing has moved or changed since.
The back of the neck wears no lacquer and has been worn to the smoothnes of a billiard cue. Feels great.
This thing is alive acoustically, which is always an excellent pointer towards its potential when plugged in. And it does not disappoint.
The bridge pickup is a sonic wonder – lots of pop, snarl & bite, with exceptional cut and clarity. The neck pickup has had its 50’s capacitor disconnected so instead of being muted and bassy, it is wonderfully woody and full.

You really need to see and hear this old Tele to appreciate its appeal. This one may have changed its skin over time, but it is what it is – a great classic guitar that happens to be a killer player – light weight, resonant, and huge Tele tone when plugged in.
