This is a 1980’s Tokai Jazz Sound electric bass in 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Made exclusively for the Japanese domestic market, this Jazz Sound has a great range of vintage tones and is a model rarely seen outside its country of origin.
Designed to replicate the look and tonal properties of Fender’s pioneering early-60s Jazz Bass model, this Tokai delivers a distinctive range of classic J Bass tonalities with clear, defined low end, midrange punch, and good top end articulation.
With the bridge pickup singled out, the aggressive growl of the round wound strings is on full display, with a prominent cut and midrange that still retains a nice low end presence. The neck pickup is naturally a bit fuller while still very articulate, and thumps quite well with the tone rolled back a bit.
With both of the pickups engaged it’s easy to dial in the perfect balance of midrange presence and low end warmth. Professionally setup, this Jazz Sound bass plays well with low action and spot-on intonation.
The maple neck has a slender C shape with slight shoulders, filling out gradually as you travel up the fretboard, measuring .810” deep at the first fret and 1.010” at the 12th. The bass adheres to traditional Fender specs with a 1 1/2″ nut width, full 34″ scale, and 7 1/2″ fretboard radius.
The slender frets have their full factory height, well rounded crowns, and show virtually no wear. The neck is straight with an ideally adjusted truss rod and plays well in all registers with no buzzing or dead spots. On the headstock, the original nickel-plated clover button tuners turn smoothly and hold pitch well. The headstock sports a Tokai Jazz Sound script logo with smaller “Oldies but Goodies” text.
All of the electronics work as they should, with stock pickups and pots. The bridge pickup reads 7.10k ohms and the neck reads 7.25k ohms. The chrome bridge and control plate have a lustrous shine, and the brown tortoise pickguard contrasts nicely with the bright sunburst gloss finish.
Weight is 9.5 lbs
Cosmetic wear is limited to some tiny dings and light scratches in the body finish, which can hardly be seen in normal light conditions. The neck is super clean front and back. And the hardware is still gleaming nicely.
This bass has a great voice, a solid feel, and a professional setup ready for the studio and stage.
A bonus with is one is its original Tokai hard case in excellent condition.
