Roger Mayer is the legendary British electrical engineer who developed several iconic electric guitar effects. At a time when guitar effects were virtually unknown, he designed and built fuzz boxes for leading English guitarists such as Big Jim Sullivan, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck. His effects can be heard on PJ Proby singles such as “Hold Me” (1964) and on numerous Yardbirds tracks.
One of his early others was the Octavia, an effects pedal which reproduced the input signal one octave higher, and mixes the two sounds with some added fuzz. Just having turned 21, Mayer saw Hendrix playing live and in his words was “blown away by his live show” at the Bag O’Nails club in Soho, London. After introducing himself backstage and talking in depth about tone and a desire to create a totally different sound, he was invited by the guitarist to a gig the following week. Via a small amp back stage, Hendrix listened to the Octavia and was excited by what he heard.
Mayer was invited by Hendrix to help overdub the solos on the songs “Purple Haze” and “Fire” which took place at the Olympic Studio, and later worked on designing custom effects to realise the sounds Hendrix heard in his head. The results, including another iconic Mayer design – the Univibe – can be heard on the albums Axis: Bold as Love and Electric Ladyland.
The Voodoo-Vibe is Mayer’s original evolution of the Univibe, as used by Robin Trower and later, David Gilmour and Michael Landau. It faithfully reproduces all the old retro sounds and incorporates the modifications he personally developed for Jimi.
The Voodoo Vibe features controls over virtually every sound parameter, a lower noise floor, and sturdier construction than the original Univibes.
The Voodoo-Vibe is completely analogue in operation and exhibits a very transparent and full sound quality that is lacking in digital products that simulate chorus and flanging effects. The digital zipper noise and graininess is eliminated and the guitar tone is maintained throughout the full dynamic range. Class A discrete circuitry is used in all audio stages and results in ultra high audio quality and very low noise.
This is one of Mayer’s original Voodoo Vibes, made around 2003 / 2004. It is the ultimate Univibe style pedal with supremely adjustable vibe/tremolo/chorus sounds. It is in great condition, with no modifications, and it sounds HUGE.
This is a rare chance to secure one of these hard-to-find original units in nice condition.
