As some followers may know, we sold this one’s marginally older brother not long ago. It was a TE Signature from 1988, serial # 002 – a fabulous guitar, now with a very happy new owner in its newfound home.
That sale prompted the owner of this one to get in touch, and it arrived in our showroom only recently. This one was probably made in the same week – it is # 004, and it’s in big, bold, beautiful black !
These two were definitely one of the very first Tommy Emmanuel Signature acoustics ever made by Maton, who supplied the following info – “The Tommy Signature was the guitar before the TE2 came about. It has a spruce top, American Rock Maple back and sides and it used the Wayne pickup. The obvious difference also was the Florentine cutaway which we do not do any more.”
Back in the late 80s, Australia’s premier acoustic player was recognised by the legendary Maton company with his own “Signature” model, which utilised top grade materials, quality components, and hand craftsmanship, appropriate for a top-of-the-line model that it was at the time. Tommy played this model exclusively for years worldwide, and he is still Maton’s highest profile brand ambassador.
This is a Maton Tommy Emmanuel Signature model acoustic guitar – it was made in September 1988 and is number 4 of its series, which makes it pretty special. This would have been one of the first models Tommy had as a Signature model, having just used standard models previously. It was one of very few ever made in this shape.

This TE Signature is one of the very best acoustic guitars ever created by Maton. It is in excellent condition and sounds great for chording, fingerpicking, or single note work. The gloss black finish is super rare – we have never seen another Maton TE in this colour. And it is in great condition – crazing lightly with age, so it is now showing that lovely patina that cannot be faithfully recreated with any modern relic process.
The rosewood fingerboard is very dark and shiny, and a joy to play. The sound is big and balanced. Professionally set up and ready to be used by a professional, or simply by a new owner who appreciates a top quality Australian made instrument which was designed for the Oz Ambassador of Guitar – Tommy Emmanuel.
Comes in a quality Hiscox hard case in excellent condition.
