Until his death in 1998, Masaru Kohno was arguably Japan’s most important luthier. His handmade instruments are revered worldwide as being of the highest quality. They are also possibly the most recorded classical guitar of the 20th century.
Although Kohno began building guitars in 1948, it wasn’t until returning back to Japan in 1960, after a 6-month trip to Spain where he apprenticed with Arcangel Fernandez, that he established his successful workshop. His international debut came in 1967, when he was awarded the Gold Medal at the Elizabeth Concourse International Guitar Building Competition in Belgium. The judging panel included Ignacio Fleta, Robert Bouchet, Joaquin Rodrigo and Alirio Diaz.
Since then many players of world renown have used Kohno guitars. Among them are Julian Bream, Oscar Gighlia, Shinichi Fukuda and Sharon Isbin.

Kohno guitars are world class instruments of the highest calibre. They feature the finest materials expected in a top class concert guitar, including old growth Indian rosewood back and sides with breathtaking grain, a fine master grade Hokkaido spruce top, ebony fingerboard, rosewood bridge, quality tuners, intricate bindings, purfling and rosette. It is a full size concert guitar with a 660 mm scale length and 52 mm width at the nut.
This instrument was bought new in 1984 and was the owner’s main playing guitar, performing professional level engagements for many years. As a result it has been used, and shows some signs of honest player wear, but on the lighter level of the scale. It has a few small marks & dings on the top, representative of over 20 years of use. These are very difficult to see and impossible to photograph. Apart from that there are no marks on the instrument. The back & sides are super clean, the tuners are solid, and the neck is straight & comfortable to play in all positions.
This Kohno Concert has a wonderful balanced character, with excellent playability and powerful projection. The sound is clear, articulate and authoritative just liked you’d expect from Masura Kohno. The beautiful Hokkaido solid spruce top has matured over the years and speaks with an impressive bold voice that will sound even better as it ages.
Comes in its original hard case in good condition (apart from an unhinged handle).
