From Martin: The Martin D-35 Dreadnought was introduced in 1965 in response to a shortage of Brazilian rosewood stock large enough to finish 2-piece Dreadnought-sized backs. The resultant three-piece back – triangular centre wedge and matching outer wings” – follows a centuries-old tradition among European and Spanish luthiers of building multi-piece backs. Martin’s three-piece back design is especially striking. Extra wide bindings, bound ebony fingerboard and ebony bridge add to the distinctiveness of this model; but the appeal of the D-35 is more than just visual. Tonally, the three-piece back produces a particularly strong bass, making the D-35 ideal for rhythm playing. To accentuate the treble, Martin uses lighter 1/4″ top braces which give the D-35 its characteristic warmth and balance.

This D35 was built in 1974 and has been kept in excellent condition. It has a very balanced sound – not too bright or boomy, perfect for recording. This finish has survived well on this 44 year old instrument – the top has mellowed to a semi satin hue, with the spruce showing its lovely grain. It has been played but never abused. It has some expected player wear including some scratches on the top, and a few light marks on the back, but no real buckle rash.
The ebony fingerboard is dark & beautiful with no signs of wear or pitting. The frets are good. The binding is in perfect condition and yellowing nicely with age.
Original Martin tuners have been replaced with quality Schaller units. A bonus is a under saddle pickup system installed some time ago. Not sure of the brand but it sounds just fine.
This is a great all-rounder. Fantastic chording guitar – a killer rhythm instrument. But also clean and articulate for flatpicking and fingerpicking.
Comes in its original Martin hard shell case in good condition.
