This is the second Hancock Adelaide archtop guitar listed by PREMIER GUITARS in the past year. The beautiful sunburst Adelaide we listed in 2017 is now residing in its happy new home in South Australia – not quite in the city of Adelaide, but still most fitting for an instrument named after that state’s capital.
This Hancock Adelaide is dressed in a stunning Natural finish, and is absolutely the equal of its sunburst sibling. We described the Sunburst Adelaide as “quite simply one of the very best handmade archtop guitars we have ever seen, or heard.”
But this one steps up to battle it out for top honours.
The Adelaide is Hancock’s top of the line flagship model. This one was hand crafted in Queensland in 2004. It is in the most pristine condition imaginable for a guitar over 14 years of age.
It was ordered and bought new direct from Hancock. The list price then was $9,800. The RRP now is A$18,000, with around a year’s wait for a new build.
The owner swears its tone has only improved with age. It is warm and rounded with lots of acoustic volume. The electric sound from the handwound floating Kent Armstrong PAF style pickup is smooth and well defined, and compliments the Adelaide’s acoustic sound beautifully.

From Hancock – “Hancock custom archtop guitars are built by brothers Dane and Sean and father Kim in the Hancock family workshop on Australia’s Gold Coast.
Each instrument is completely handmade by us from start to finish. About 200 hours is spent constructing each guitar. This amount of labour means we produce only a very limited number of guitars, but also results in instruments with perfect workmanship, a look of genuine quality craftsmanship and a magnificent sound that only comes from a handcrafted archtop guitar.
Only the finest quality, hand-picked materials are used in a Hancock archtop guitar. Each component is made to exacting specifications and then tuned to suit the piece of timber it is made from. This gives the assembled instrument the optimum sound and the most beautiful look possible.
We have studied the instruments of the master archtop builders John D’Angelico and James D’Aquisto and drawn much inspiration from their designs, while also incorporating our own ideas into the design of their guitars, both in aesthetics and tone.
We make five standard models. These range from The Jazz Electric, to our flagship The Adelaide, a stunning instrument built from the finest materials available with intricate inlay and appointments. We build our guitars without the use of duplicating machines, CNC made parts, or parts sourced elsewhere. Our archtop guitars are excellent value, with prices at about 50% of similar American made guitars of equal quality.”
The combination of the finest aged European timbers and elaborate binding and inlay work mark the Adelaide as the top of the line Hancock model. The top is carved from an aged European spruce cello soundboard blank, while the back and sides are crafted from the finest flamed European maple. With aesthetics reminiscent of the famous D’Angelico instruments from the 1950s-60s, the Adelaide is distinguished from lower Hancock models not only by its superior quality materials, but also the elaborate bindings and inlays which adorn the body and neck.
This instrument is in stunning, as new condition. It has been appreciated and cared for by a fastidious owner since he bought it new in 2004. It has been well looked after, and presents in showroom condition. Apart from some very light swirling on the pickguard, this guitar shows virtually no sign of player wear. This guitar is extraordinarily lively with a lush acoustic sound, and a glorious amplified tone when plugged in.
The Adelaide model is so rarely now made by Hancock, that this may be a unique opportunity to purchase a world class handmade archtop at a less than astronomical price.
Comes in its deluxe Hancock hard case in excellent condition.
