Besides being the most exciting guitarist the world had ever seen in the 60s, Jimi Hendrix was also an artist who expressed himself not only sonically, but visually as well – through his wild clothing right down to how he dressed his instruments.
Although he was mainly associated with the Fender Stratocaster, Hendrix also played some Gibson instruments. It seems natural that Jimi would take a liking to the Flying V – it had a futuristic look, and you could flip it around to being a lefty without any sections of the body becoming awkwardly in your way. Jimi took his original ’67 Flying V and handpainted it in a very personal way, using whatever materials he could find, mainly nail polish.
In 2006, the Gibson Custom Shop decided to reissue the iconic Hendrix Psychedelic V. Purchased by Jimi in 1967 and used on tour in Europe during 1967 and 1968, the guitar, with its swirling psychedelic designs, highlights the spirit of the times and showcased Jimi’s unique artistic expression. Gibson Custom Shop used proprietary materials to reproduce the same sense of depth and texture, and the design is a faithful reproduction of the original. The 300 limited edition instruments were handpainted by master luthier Bruce Kunkel and signed by Jimi’s sister Janie Hendrix. They still sell for up to $20,000.
This not one of those.
This is a straightforward Gibson Flying V ‘67 reissue built in Kalamazoo Michigan in 1998. The original black guitar has been used as the canvas for an earlier unknown owner to replicate the intricate Hendrix artwork on the guitar he played at the legendary Isle of Wight concert in 1968. And quite a good job it is too – not just a rough paint job, but a very faithful replication of Bruce Kunkel’s work for Gibson Custom Shop.
