This is a Gibson Les Paul LPR-9 1959 Reissue built in 2001, from the first run of Aged Historic Les Pauls. It features Gibson’s “Custom Authentic” aged treatment from that era, some years before Tom Murphy became the brand’s in house ageing specialist.
Gibson Custom Shop did a very limited run of these guitars in 2001, numbers indicate approx 100 or less. And it is known that the batch of wood for these Les Pauls was a special selection of mahogany and maple, which certainly shows in the spectacular presentation of this guitar.
With their Aged Historic series, Gibson Custom Shop dramatically upped the ante with unparalleled leaps in accuracy and vintage vibe in their Les Paul reissues. Gibson achieved scary-authentic accuracy by studying the materials, manufacturing techniques and specifications of original vintage instruments. And then they gave them the “Custom Authentic” ageing treatment to replicate the look and feel of a genuine vintage instrument.
This is a fantastic LPR-9, with a beautiful bookmatched flame maple top and accurate ageing artistry uniquely created by Gibson Custom Shop. From plastics using the original vintage spec material, to the double carving of tops and necks to ensure vintage accurate profiles and dishing, the Aged Historic reissues are about as close as it gets to owning a real vintage instrument.

Even prior to Gibson’s association with Tom Murphy, the brand’s Custom Authentic ageing process recreated the look and feel of classic vintage instruments that were unsurpassed at the time. The artistry employed in the ageing process is exemplary, and impossible to photograph in all its detail.
This guitar is in excellent condition having been well looked after by a fastidious owner. It is pretty much in the same condition as when bought, except that it feels played-in, and mighty close to a true vintage instrument.
It has a great feeling ‘59 large profile neck shape. It is a solid piece of wood, but comfortable to play, and not an overly fat “baseball bat” profile as found on some 1959 reissues.
The pickups on this one are rich in tone, harmonically complex and well balanced. It is an exception guitar to play.
Weight is 9.5 lbs.
Comes in its Lifton style Gibson Brown Hard Shell Case in as new condition, with Gibson Custom Certificate of Authenticity.
