This is a great guitar.
It was one of the very first top end acoustics listed by PREMIER GUITARS in Sydney when we first started up back in 2014.
From that day it became a benchmark acoustic – everything that came in the door was compared and charted on a scale out of 10 – when the G-70 was maybe a 9.5
We do not say this lightly, because John from PREMIER GUITARS has been around some great acoustic guitars over the past 40 years, and this one is way up there with the best of them.
The G-70 remained at the top of the acoustic totem pole while it was in stock before it sold to an astute buyer who knew this actual guitar from years gone by. He has played and loved this guitar for 5 years, but things change and now it’s time to move this one on.
Its previous owner was the legendary Australian singer songwriter Mike McClellan, who consigned this guitar with PREMIER GUITARS in 2014. Mike bought this Gallagher back in the late 70s when he was writing & recording hits such as Song & Dance Man, Rock’n’Roll Lady, and Saturday Dance.
Mike’s live album “An Evening With Mike McClellan” was released in 1978 and included some of his most requested concert tunes, among them several brilliant demonstrations of his unique guitar playing, mostly on this Gallagher G-70.
Mike says – “It has a few shallow belt scratch marks on the back which were there when I bought the guitar in the late 70s and I decided not to have it refinished as I was concerned that it might alter the sound, which is glorious. “
This is the same Gallagher model played by the late, great Doc Watson before Gallagher created his signature model. Gallaghers have also been the instrument of choice of notables such as Johnny Cash, Merle Travis, Waylon Jennings, Charlie Daniels, Joe Bonamassa and Zac Brown.
This one is Serial Number – 976, made in September 1976 by the late J.W. Gallagher himself, the company founder.
Same size as Martin D style guitar
Solid sitka spruce top
Brazilian rosewood back and sides
Brazilian rosewood fingerboard
Ivoroid bound body, fingerboard & headstock
Diamond & square inlay
Fitted with a high quality LR Baggs Anthem pick up system.
The neck is slightly wider (1 11/16″ nut) than many D style acoustic guitars which makes it a great finger picker’s guitar as well as being the preferred guitar model for flat pickers. The family of founder JW Gallagher continued to make fabulous acoustics from the original factory at Wartrace Tennessee until 2019 when the business was relocated to Murfreesboro by new owner David Mathis.
Known for the quality of its handcrafted construction, Gallagher guitars gained attention from numerous high profile musicians, including those listed above.
Mathis explains –
“And the thing about a Gallagher, it has a well-balanced, deep tone. But it’s still very bright. It rings like a bell – that’s been the byline for years. The sound just sustains. It’s amazing.
What makes each Gallagher guitar so special is the hands-on attention to detail and passion that go into making them. Each one is cut, assembled, sanded and sealed by hand.
Our people take their time to make sure and get everything right. That tradition continues at the reborn Gallagher Guitar Co.”
A rare gem, this one.
Comes in a later hard shell case in new condition, along with a letter of provenance from Mike McClellan.
