This is very nice 1974 Fender Stratocaster in great condition. Complete with its original bright 3 colour sunburst gloss finish, this guitar has a chiming, airy quality and a percussive cut. Twangy and snappy when it’s required or bell-like and warm at your discretion, all of the traditional Strat bases are covered with this one.
We know that many 70s Strats have had some surgery during their lives, sometimes for good reason. But this one remains amazingly original. About the only update we can see is a 5 way selector switch, which is not a bad thing. The 5 way became standard in 1977, so it was on its way already.
We cannot discern any changes to –
Body & neck finish
Tremolo bridge & saddles
Plastics including knobs, pickguard and tremolo cavity cover
Nut & frets
Wiring & pots
The neck has a medium C shaped profile that borders on the chunkier side of things with generous shoulders and consistent depth as you travel up the fretboard. The guitar retains its original frets which are showing some wear in the lower positions, but this does not affect playability for now. A new owner may consider a refret in due course, but most frets retain their full meat and height, with sparingly little wear further up the board.
Some 70s necks were of the narrower variety but this one has a fairly standard width of 1 5/8” at the nut. Radius is 7 1/2” but string bending is clean and easy in all positions. The original F tuners are intact, turn smoothly, and hold pitch accurately.
On the lighter side for a ’70s Strat at 7.9 lbs, this one has a surprisingly warm and full sound even when unplugged, with a natural bell-like chime that translates well through the pickups. It has had a professional setup, and plays beautifully with a medium low action, and spot-on intonation.
The original finish is in great condition with some natural wear showing, which we think adds to the vintage appeal of this 45 year old guitar.
Comes in its original Fender hard shell case in good condition.
