From Fender –
“The Fender FR-50 Resonator Acoustic Guitar offers beginner and intermediate players an affordable gateway in the twangy world of resonators with the assurance of a Fender build. A spruce top/mahogany sides and back tonewood combination results in a warm punch with plenty of midrange accented by the high-end metallic strike of the single chrome finish resonator. If you’re looking for a backporch strummer, you’ve come to the right place.
The FR-50 features a pretty laminate spruce top with laminated mahogany back and sides. The rounded neck is comprised of Nato which is an inexpensive reddish-brown wood known for its strength and durability. The fingerboard is composed of Sonokelin which is an inexpensive variety of rosewood and the nut is made from the “miracle” substance known as Tusq. The bridge is referred to by Fender as a Split Saddle and is composed of a material called Micarta which is a composition of various materials including paper, linen, and fibreglass which go through a process known as thermosetting which hardens the materials and makes them of use in various applications.
Of note as well in the FR-50 is the bright chrome finished resonator and the unique Fender F-holes in the spruce top. The resonator itself contains a single stainless steel plate which acts as a reverberation or sound projection device in place of a soundhole and gives off a unique tone especially when played with a slide. These clever devices were initially employed by guitarists to enhance and amplify their volume, before amplification devices were available. Early resonators were created specifically in order to perform at a volume level that could compete with booming horn sections, and be audible to both other musicians and the audience as well.
The Fender FR-50 measures 24.75″ long and is 3.87″ deep. Width at the nut is 1.62″ and the fingerboard contains 20 frets, 14 of which are accessible. This particular model boasts the spectacular Sunburst finish and the body of the guitar is sealed in a gloss polyurethane.

This FR-50 is in fine condition. A few minor marks here and there, but nothing of consequence. It has been played, but in a good way. It feels broken in, the sound has mellowed just a touch, and it’s a comfortable thing to play. It is loud, but not harsh. And it responds nicely to your touch – sweet & subtle, or big and bold.
If you’re heading off into resonator land for the first time, this instrument is a very affordable introduction to the world of the metal voiced guitar. The Fender FR-50 sounds just fine when played with plectrum, fingerpicking, or with a slide.
It’s still a guitar, but it’s different. And it’s a lot of fun to explore some different tunings and a bit of sliding around.
Comes in a good quality after-market hard case in good condition.
