Fender has spent the last 30 years re-learning its past and with the American Vintage Reissue range has homed in on what it sees as the three essential vintage Teles – the quintessential ash-bodied Blackguard ’52; the slimmer-necked ’58 (this one) and the rosewood ‘board ’64.
The American Vintage series is crafted with meticulous attention to correct reproduction detail, often using original tooling. It is some of Fender’s best work outside of the Fender Custom Shop.
This one appears to be finished in Fender’s “Journeyman” Relic lacquer finish. The Aged White Blonde finish imparts the appearance of years of ageing and lots of gigs, without the heavy wear found on Fender’s “Heavy Relics”. The finish replicates the wear associated with decades of use, and is in Fender’s classic transparent “Aged White Blonde”, which shows the natural grain of the ash body.
The American Vintage ’58 Telecaster returns us back to early 1958, when the Telecaster changed from its original U-shaped neck profile (a real handful) to a more comfortable D-shape for its maple neck. The ’58 is lighter in weight than the ’52 Tele AVRI, and has a distinctly slimmer neck that feels more modern at the lower frets, even though it is period-correct, according to Fender. This neck feels actually like a more modern profile – 9 1/2” radius and medium vintage frets. Very comfortable to play and clean in all positions.
Period correct features includes the truss rod adjustment at the heel, a lightweight ash body, vintage tuners, staggered bridge pickup pole magnets, a single-ply pickguard, “top-hat” switch tip, flat-top knurled aluminium chrome control knobs and string-through body bridges with solid-steel saddles.
Unusually, this 58 AVRI sports a single ply black pickguard – perhaps a personal preference by a previous owner ?
This USA Vintage ’58 Reissue Tele was manufactured in 2012 and is in original, unchanged condition except for the pickguard. Frets show 99% original condition with lots of life left. Weight is a light and lively 6.8 lbs, and the sweet sounding specially voiced Fender Vintage USA pickups replicate the original ’58 Tele sound.
Comes in a Hiscox Liteflite hard case in excellent condition.
