This is a high quality electric lap steel guitar made in Melbourne by a company world renowned for its acoustic guitars – Cole Clark. The company has a well deserved reputation for high grade materials and excellent workmanship.
In an environmental mission statement from co-founders Adam Cole and Bradley Clark, the pair have made a concerted effort to steer away from dwindling “Red List” timbers common to the luthier world and instead have focused on utilising tone woods native to Australia.
The Cole Clark Violap features a semi hollow body, with internally carved top and back. The tone is at once strong yet sweet, the response from a tone bar lively and laconic, depending solely on your mood. This is the lap steel you’ll want to play in the small hours of the night, when the house is quiet, or when room service is closed.
Physical balance is good, aided by the hollow neck design, the hourglass shape vaguely reminiscent of Weissenborn body shapes from the thirties. Light weight with great projection, the Violap will change the way you look at lap steel playing.
The VL2P was Cole Clark’s top lap steel model and is now discontinued. This has made them very rare and hard to find, especially in virtually new condition like this one. It has earned respect from noted players such as Jerry Douglas.

And Ben Harper owns this model and can be seen using it on at least one concert DVD.
The VL2P features two humbucking pickups as well as the excellent Cole-Clark acoustic ‘Faceblend’ piezo system for a huge amplified sound. Also, this model is semi-solid like a Gibson 335, so that it can be played at very high volume with minimal feedback.
There are two output jacks so the humbuckers and piezos can be routed to separate amps. The 2nd humbucker is actually set underneath the fretboard at the 17th fret position, with only the poles sticking through the fretboard.

This Violap VL2P is in excellent, as new condition. It has been lightly played and well looked after. There is no evidence of player wear anywhere, no changes or modifications. It would definitely suit a new buyer.
It is sweet at low volume, with lots of character and a unique voice via its combination of humbucker and active under bridge pickup circuitry.
But turn it up and you can melt walls if you want. This thing screams with major authority when powered through a tube amp with a little crunch kicked in.
It is a high quality piece of gear and a very versatile tonal tool, with enough sonic options to satisfy the needs of any player.
Comes in its fitted Cole Clark hard shell case in new condition.
