Maton
Vintage Maton FG100 - AUS 1972
Pickup currently unavailable
Aged for nearly fifty-three years, this classic Australian-built guitar produces a bell-like resonance with pristine tone and projection, making it a standout piece. Ideal for leading a band or as a treasured solo instrument.
Maton’s FG models, introduced in 1965, were designed for the folk scene popularised by the likes of Bob Dylan at the time. Today, the FG100 shines in folk, bluegrass, or indie music, on par with legendary models like Gibson’s SJ and J-45, Guild’s D-40, and Martin’s D-18 and D-28.
This adaptable guitar features a dreadnought body with Red Maple back and sides, a solid Sitka Spruce top, and a Maple neck, offering a bright high end, warm midrange, and balanced low tones. Built with top-tier components, it includes a Rosewood bridge and headstock overlay, Maton’s original ‘Double-Thrust’ truss rod, mother-of-pearl dot inlays, front and rear binding, an adjustable saddle, and solid, hand-carved Spruce bracing.
This Maton is equipped with an aftermarket Sunrise pickup and preamp system which can sell for as much as $1,500 on their own. These pickups are held in very high regard for their clarity in amplification of the classic acoustic tones.
The guitar has replacement Schaller tuners and there is a small crack along the bridge pins but looks to be under control with no signs of expanding, an easy fix for any luthier. There is some buckle rash on the back, light swirling from picking and the odd knock or ding, as to be expected of a working instrument of this vintage.
The original low-profile frets are in very good condition with light wear, mainly in the first three positions. The action is excellent, and the overall condition is very good. A great Aussie workhorse that is ready to go!
