Gibson
Vintage Gibson J-200 Left-Handed - USA 1955
Pickup currently unavailable
Originally introduced in 1938 as the Super Jumbo (SJ-200), this legendary guitar was renamed the J-200 in 1947 and has since become a cornerstone of Gibson’s acoustic lineup. This specific model, from 1955, is particularly rare, as it is a left-handed version—something seldom seen in vintage guitars of this caliber. Known for its impressive 17” lower bout, the J-200 earned the nickname “The King of the Flat Tops,” with its massive presence and powerful sound. Over the years, its key features have remained unchanged, including the ornate pearl inlays, moustache bridge, and floral-trimmed pickguard.
The 1955 J-200 retains all the signature characteristics that have made it iconic. Its wide maple body and spruce top create a resonant, well-balanced tone, with clear highs, rich mids, and enhanced bass response. The craftsmanship and attention to detail, from the golden-era aesthetics to the intricate inlay work, make it not only a musical powerhouse but also a visually stunning piece. The J-200 has long been a favorite of legends like Elvis Presley and Bob Dylan, and this left-handed version stands as a testament to its enduring appeal and versatility.
For a nearly 70-year-old guitar, this J-200 is in remarkable condition. The maple back, sides, and neck are beautifully preserved, and the spruce top is free from any major damage. There are a few very minor dings and scratches, but these are expected for its age and do not detract from its appearance or performance. The original gold-plated tuners are in excellent working order, and the frets show very minimal wear. With comfortable action and a big, bold sound, this guitar is a rare find, especially as a left-handed model. It comes with its original hard case in great condition, making it a fantastic piece for any collector or player.
