Here’s a lovely surprise package. This is a super rare Hancock Constellation Dreadnought, handmade in Queensland, Australia in 1997.
Hancock custom guitars are built by brothers Dane and Sean and father Kim in the Hancock family workshop on Australia’s Gold Coast. Each instrument is completely handmade from start to finish and over 100 hours is spent constructing each guitar. This amount of labour means they produce a very limited number of guitars, but also results in instruments with excellent workmanship, the feel of genuine quality craftsmanship and a magnificent sound that only comes from a handcrafted guitar.
There’s not a lot of info out there on the Hancock Constellation, so we contacted Hancock personally and Sean was most accommodating with filling in the facts.
Hancock only made 3 or 4 acoustics labeled “Constellation” back in 1997-1998. Thereafter they were designated simply “Dreadnought”. The company stopped making acoustics around 2000, and began specializing in archtops.
We know that the Constellation features a beautiful solid Sitka spruce top, and solid mahogany back and sides. The mahogany neck sports a beautiful ebony fingerboard with 20 medium jumbo frets in good condition. This one also features a stunning Macassar Ebony inlay around the sound hole.
This is simply a great guitar. It is light and lively, with a superbly balanced tonal range. It is bright on the top, and with a nicely articulated midrange and solid bottom end. It is a great flatpicker, and also certainly works for finger picking.
It is in excellent condition, with only a few small dings & dents but nothing of any concern. And certainly no structural problems. Truss rod is good, Gotoh tuners are solid & accurate, intonation is spot on. Everything works as it should, and this one is a joy to play. Weighs a flyaway 4.1 lbs
This Constellation is a wonderful example of Aussie craftsmanship – they do things very well at Hancock.
Comes in a Hiscox hard shell case in new condition.
